Hi Gareth, thanks for posting photos of your 1010.

It looks like a nice example of a Hayman, and I'm also in the Southampton area so it would have been an ideal deal... but unfortunately I've just done a reality check and really can't afford to buy any more guitars at the moment (I've had a bit of a spree this year!). Sorry for getting your hopes up with my initial reply.

I would suggest you put a new post in the Guitars for Sale section here: viewforum.php?f=14

Good luck, and if you haven't sold in 3 months, let me know!

Ok, so this is my first post, bear with me! I have a bunch of Hayman guitars - bought my first in around 1981 when forming my first band - kind of a cross between the stooges and hawkwind, mmm. I saw the then 8 year old or so 3030 and fell in love. Big, chunky, original, a bit strange. The other proto band members wanted me to buy a black les paul copy, glad I didn't. Played it ever since through thick and thin. Since then gathered the following 'collection':

Hayman 3030 (my first love!) - twin humbuckers, BIIIIG warm riffing sound
Hayman 1010 (three single coils, bit more tele ish but still full sound)
Hayman 2020 semi solid (twin single coils, lovely to either rock or twang)
Hayman Comet - budget Hayman apparantly, one humbucker with coil selects, very bitey
Hayman White Cloud (in white) - v rare and unplayable. the design of these guitars with double cutaway at neck and huge chamber for the pickups means that there is NO strength for the neck.
Hayman White Cloud (natural) - looks tattier than my other White Cloud but actually plays! really nice sound, a little like an SG perhaps
Hayman Modular System 3- the modular guitars were odd in that you can unscrew the tone control unit - there were a variety to choose from  . I have two different ones, system 3 and (seies 5 I think)
Hayman Modular System 5 - anyhow, they both sound awesome, although the 'system 5' is a bit 'worn' - only one pickup works. I will get round to fixing it soon as it plays very well.
Hayman 4040 bass- my only bass, used on all my tracks. Love it to bits.
Hayman 5050 semi solid bass - I have all the bits, but it has been well and truly smashed up at some point - a long term project, but the rarest Hayman I have.

I have also attached some original scanned adverts from the burns guitar book.

The vibra sonic chamber is kinda neat actually - the strings go through the body, and pass through a separate tone chamber with six smaller springs/strings in it apparantly, which really adds to teh sustain. Mental eh!?

the pickups are also a bit strange, mounted on a big metal plate.

Hey ho, I love em. :D check out http://www.shergold.co.uk/hayman.html for some more details.

Hi nurgeloid, welcome to the forum. :D

Wow, what a collection! I've never played a Hayman, but I love the look of them, and the 'vibra sonic chamber' sounds cool - do you have any photos of this, I'm intrigued to see exactly what its like.

Are there any key Haymans that are missing from your collection? Anything you're on the lookout for?

I have no photos of the vibrasonic tone chamber - it is buried in the body of each guitar. The closest i got was when I had a white cloud in bits (the unplayable one - it was unplayable before I got to it btw!). With everything out of the body I could hear something that coudl only really be the strings in the chamber resonating when I tapped the body.

As regards missing guitars from the collection - I'd like a 5050 semi solid bass in one piece, and it would be good to have a full collection of the sound modules. I even have an Original Hayman gig bag - must have been one of the first companies to make zip up vinyl guitar bags.

I've had my Hayman2020 for years, its seen a lot of action, been in many bands and I still play it practically every day. Great unique sound.. The frets at the top are now very worn down, can I change them or will this diminish the value of the guitar?

Hi bekway, welcome to the forum; your 2020 looks like a lovely guitar.

I see no problem with a re-fret, as long as it's done well and not bodged. There's lots of luthiers who would be quite happy to do this for you, probably replacing some worn frets and levelling, dressing and polishing the rest.

I don't know where you're based, but I've been recommended Joe White of J. White Workshops near Aldershot, Hampshire. http://www.jwhite-guitarworkshops.co.uk/index.html A friend of mine recently has a setup done on his 5-string bass and says that not only was the result fantastic, but that Joe is a lovely guy and loves talking guitars. :)

If you fancy doing the job yourself (which I wouldn't recommend on your favourite guitar!), you can get everything you need - including lots of tips and advice - from luthier supplies company Stewart MacDonald (in the States). http://www.stewmac.com

Let us know if you decide to get it done... I'd be interested to hear about the results. :)

hi all, new member here, be gentle with me ;)

I have a number of vintage guitars, ranging from an Ovation Deacon, through to a Hayman semi-acoustic bass, and it is this that i am posting about there.

I've had the Hayman since 1985. It has the split p/u's, but just the single ones, not the double arrangement. It's finished in black and is a semi, short-scale, with f-holes.

I've used it on recordings and it has a lovely, sort of 'woody' sound, which sounds fantastic for 60's style music.

The curious thing is, it says 1010 on the pickguard, but I didn't know there was a 1010 bass version. Anyone have any ideas on this?
I'll post up some pics in the next couple of days.

I am planning to restore it as it's had a bit of a hard life, plus needs a re-fret.

By the way, if we have any fans here, I could go on about Ovation Breadwinners and Deacons all day long! :D
