Every time I buy a new guitar, I think "I really must sort out proper guitar insurance"... but then I forget about it and never do! It never seemed worth it for a couple of guitars (and they're covered to some degree by my home insurance), but as the value of individual guitars gets greater with each one I buy, and I have more and more guitars, I guess it's pretty dumb to not insure them with a specialist insurance.

Any suggestions for good policies, or what I should look for in a guitar insurance policy?

Thanks,
JB

If you've got more than a couple of guitars and there's worth more than a couple of hundred bucks each, you must get insurance! Start by Googling "guitar insurance", there's a ton of specialist companies you can deal with. If you collect older guitars (say pre-war) or high value guitars, you might be better with an antiques insurer rather than a guitar insurance company. They understand teh difference between "value" and "new cost"!

Yey, it makes me laugh how insurance companies aer so proud of their "new for old" policies - great for a TV or computer, but not much help with a 1959 Les Paul or a 1965 Rickenbacker or a 1939 ES-250 or.... ;)

If your guitars are worth insuring, they're worth a specialist musical instrument insurance. Make sure you keep LOTS of photos of all your guitars (incl s/no's etc), and store them away from the guitars. Just in case. :o

Guys,

A good insurance company that specifically provides guitar insurance for collectors/musicians certainly knows the difference between "replacement value" (in other words, new for old) versus "agreed value" (what it's actually worth). But, not all of the companies that provide guitar insurance offer this... so make sure you understand replacement vs. agreed value coverage in your policy.

One company I do know of for sure that offers agreed value coverage and is geared toward guitar insurance (and all other instruments apparently) is the Anderson group. check em out:

The other thing to be careful of is convincing yourself that you're covered under you homeowners policy... Anderson group has a FAQ about it:
