Although I keep most of my guitars safely tucked away in individual guitar cases, I usually have one or two guitars out in the room ready to pick up an play when the mood takes me. I've always used guitars regular guitar stands for this, but it's never very good... I keep moving them to different places in the room because I'm worried about damaging them - especially when we have visitors with kids!

So I'm thinking maybe I should put a couple of guitar hangers on the wall and hang the guitars instead of using stands.

Before I buy the hangers, a couple of questions...
Is there any potential for long-term damage from hanging guitars from ther neck?
Are guitar hangers "universal" or do I need different hangers for different guitars? e.g. Fender vs. Gibson headstocks or electric guitars vs. acoustic guitars?
Any recomendationd for best guitar hangers? There's loads of choice...

Thanks

I've got a Hercules guitar hanger:

GSP38WB
Attractive Wood Base for home mounting*
AutoSwivel yoke allows different shaped guitars and basses to hang vertically
Auto Grip System yoke safely and securely holds your instrument
Specially Formulated Foam completely covers the yoke
Length: 105mm (4.1")
Load capacity: 7kg (15.4lbs)

I use it for both of my "everyday" guitars, a Strat Plus and a Takamine G series. despite being very different guitars they both hang comfortably from the hanger - the only thing is that with the electric it looks as if it's a long way from the wall because obviously the body's much thinner than the electric. The swivel mechanism is the key because the acoustic hangs with the yoke level, but with the strat it naturally hangs with the yoke at an angle (but obviously the guitar still hangs straight). The "auto grip" mechanism puts down guard fingers automatically (from the weight of the guitar), so there's no chance of it slipping out but as soon as you lift it the fingers fod out of the way. I'm certainly pleased with mine. The main problem is pursuading the wife that it's a good idea to have guitars hanging on the wall!

I'll try to post a photo of mine with the two different guitars when I get a chance.

String Swing do a vast range, mostly aimed at shops, studios etc, but this one would be OK for home use. Not quite as clever as the Hercules one though!

There shouldn't be any problems with the weight of the guitar on the neck, but be careful about the material used to cushion the hanger yoke - good quality hangers should be OK, but cheapie ones use cheap rubber that can mark the neck after a while (chemical reaction). Also, even with a quality hanger you will eventually end up with slight contrast marks where the hanger contacts the neck or headstock as the wood won't fade there, but will elsewhere. And obviously you should position your hanger carefully so that your guitar doesn'y get too much sunlight! :o

Pretty much the same comments apply to regular guitar stands too.

I'm about to buy 4 (possible more) String Swing guitar hangers to mount my electric guitars on the wall, but can't decide whether to buy the wooden or the metal-based hanger. I'd like the guitars to hang as close to the wall as possible... does anyone know whether there's a difference in dimensions of the metal vs wooden guitar hanger? The metal one is a thinner baseplate but I don't know whether that means the guitar position ends up different, or not. Difficult to be sure from the photos and I can't find any dimensions from String Swing websites. CC01 vs. CC11

Thanks,
Paul

To answer my own question, I emailed String Swing direct, and a very nice lady called Anne replied thus...
Quote:
Hi Paul,
The hanger that will allow you to have your guitar as close as possible is
the CC11N. In looking into this I discovered we have a picture of our CC01N
on the site but we do not have a picture of the CC11N. It is available for
sale on our site where you would see the regular CC11 and you can pick the
CC11N from the drop down menu.
To get an idea as to how it would look, go to the CC01N and imagine that
yoke on one of the CC11 back plate.
Sorry for the confusion on this, but I am thankful you brought the question
up.
We have so many products that sometimes little details are missed.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Best regards,

Anne Tainter

Hi Everyone,

Sorry I've posted this elsewhere in the wrong post.

I've just started making these hangers (after 3 years designing them), they are an all angle, any wall/ceiling low visibility hanger.
The website ishttp://www.wiamusic.com
We're a new company so any advice and comments would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Adrian

Hi Adrian, welcome to the forum... I'm always keen to see new inventions for the guitar.

I love the idea behind your guitar brackets - so simple, so obvious, why has no-one done it before?!

You need to get together with Joe0409 - see here viewtopic.php?f=3&t=270 - your hangers look perfect for his display boards. :D

I'm just a little worried by the security of your hangers; somehow trusting our prized guitars to plastic brackets just seems wrong! :o But I'm sure you've done your homework and made it strong enough. They certainly look great.
