There are two main styles of book for the guitar collector - the glossy, arty and expensive coffee table books and the dry, but stuffed-with-facts enthusiasts books full of serial numbers, neck profiles and pick-up varients.

However, The Ultimate Guitar Book by Tony Bacon falls somewhere between the two. It is nearly 200 pages of basic historical information about all types of guitars, together with some great photos. No in-depth analysis here, but a great overview of the development of the guitar from it's earliest form to the modern day.

"Includes over 850 illustrations of more than 450 guitars - all photographed in colour specially for this book, and many seen here for the very first time."

The Ultimate Guitar Book is a great browser's book and a useful starting point for both new guitar enthusiasts and established collectors alike.

I've got this book and as Red Paul describes, it's a nice browsing book, lots of great photos and a good precis of the history of the guitar including all the key stages of electric guitar development, with American, British, Japanese etc guitars, photos of guitar construction etc.
A perfect beginners book or general overview, but doesn't pretend to be an in-depth study of any particular model or genre.

Tony Bacon is a well known guitar author and has published a lot of guitar books either on his own or in collaboration with others (often as editor).

Hi Hoferist,
I have this book also in many editions and it is probably considered one of the most popular illustrated guitar books of our time in the world. This was one of Tony Bacon first involvements in a guitar book and he went on to publish many more well respected guitar books and most of them I have in my collection.
If you visit my site archtopguitarsandbooks.com you will see a lot of these books and it will give you an idea of how many great Guitar books that have been published. I have a lot of guitars in my collection and and not all on my site. I have accepted years ago that it would be impossible for me to own every guitar I see and want. However the illustrated guitar books give me the oppotunity to see a lot more guitars than is possible by any other means and enjoy more guitars than I could possibly afford. Many other books might not be necessary with modern technology but I have yet to find anything that will replace a good edited illustrated guitar book. I can not get what I want from the net in this area. Guys like Tony Bacon produce books on Guitars that are so informative and correct because the publications take thousand of hours of reserch and no one on line could afford to offers this kind of complete concise work as a free service and should not be expected to. A good example of what i am saying is: I spend thousand of hours on my site giving free advice on line unrelated to selling becaue I love Archtops but I can not afford to give them away free and never will.

Here are some of my guitar books.
These are all very informative.

My favourite mag would be 'Guitar Aficionado' followed by 'Guitarist'

How much does it cost? I would like to get a copy of that. I have only learned the basic notes by following the guitar charts that is usually attached to song-hits, poor me..

Cool. I only have one edition of this book from Tony Bacon. I never thought that this book has many editions. Having these books would really let you know more about guitar.

I guess Vintage Guitar magazine is the most well-known in the states. It's pretty popular but tends to focus on high-end Fenders and Gibsons (especially 50s/60s) rather than later or foreign guitars. Although I think I did once see an Ibanez featured.

Not sure if you folks in UK and Australia can get it?

Just received The Ultimate Guitar Book and was full of facts which gives further information to what I already have. The book was schools ex-library which was in excellent condition it must have been good area, I will have to put guitar stickers over library stamp to personalize. I notice Antoria Rockstar EG1935 Semi Acoustic Guitar with Red Yellow sunburst in the book, which guitar has already been mentioned in this forum, it is copy of Gibson ES 335 Yellow Red Sunburst that can also be found playing by Steve Howe on Asia XXX - Live in San Francisco DVD/Blu-ray which is wonderful concert. I notice there's only one small photo of Antoria Rockstar EG1935 on internet and selling price is about $134 for resale.

GOOD Wishes TO All
